A sitemap is a list of pages which you have on your site. They show which pages branch from each other and which are directly shown on the homepage. They are important to allow Google to find all the pages relevant to your site. Some pages including URLs may not be discovered by Google’s crawling bots, and therefore the sitemap will ensure that these pages are being ranked and shown within the Google’s bots.
